Four decades of Metal
SEPULTURA, the Brazilian thrash metal band from Belo Horizonte, originally formed by Max and Igor Cavalera in 1984, has been one of the most influential thrash metal bands since the 1990s.
Current members are Paulo Jr. on bass – the only musician present in Sepultura since its beginnings – Andreas Kisser on guitar since 1987, Derrick Green – the only non-Brazilian member – on vocals since 1998, and the latest addition to the band’s current line-up is drummer Eloy Casagrande since 2011, a young prodigy aged just twenty when he joined the band.

Formed against a backdrop of police repression that marked the final hours of Brazil’s military dictatorship, SEPULTURA enjoyed international success in the late 1980s in a style akin to thrash metal, helping to popularize the genre in the USA and Europe. His three landmark albums are Arise (1991), Chaos A.D. (1993) and Roots (1996). Their fifteenth album, Quadra, was released in February 2020 by German metal label Nuclear Blast.
Since the arrival of Derrick, the band has found a new lease of life, enabling it to survive the years while remaining a reference in the genre.
In 2020, SEPULTURA’s discography includes a total of fifteen studio albums, two live albums, three compilations, four EPs, five videos, thirteen singles, and fifteen music videos, which have sold over three million copies in the USA, and 20 million copies worldwide. In 2024 they will celebrate the band’s fourth decade of existence.
